MYERS FAMILY HISTORY

John J. Myers some years ago, wrote a family history about his grandfather, William Myers , and his descendants. Madison Dero Myers also wrote a family history about his mother and father ,

John Clark Myers. In the narration, he tells that John Clark was born and raised so many miles north and east of Carlyle.

Thomas Arthur Myers, grandson of John Clark Myers, and a resident of Greenville, Bond County, Illinois, gathered information on his relatives, a lot of them living at that time. He also acquired copies of these 2 histories. He didn't know how William and his family were related, but he was sure they were. During his years of search and gathering information, he was unable to determine the relationship between John Clark and William Myers.

Thomas Arthur Myers shared these copies with me along with much information he had gathered, many years ago. Through ignorance on my part, I did not keep my original copy and therefore cannot check for accuracy of what I typed up. I hope that the errors are few.

As you will see, John Clark Myers and William Myers were brothers. By using the description of the location of John Clark's boyhood residence in relation to Carlyle, I was able to find out who owned land there at that period of time. The court records provided the names, marriages, etc. of the rest of the family.

FORWARD

The information contained in this booklet has been obtained from family histories, individuals, deeds, court actions, marriage licenses and census records.

The code number in front of each name does more than just identify the person, the last number tells their place in the family and the other numbers tell which family they belong to.

The last digit tells which child the person is, in his family. If the last number is a 5, that person was born fifth in the family. Remove the number 5 and if the last number is a 2, (the remaining numbers belong to the parent), this parent was the second child in his or her family. These remaining numbers give the code number for the grandparent and the last number will be the order of birth of the grandparent in that family.

** Footnote: All references to the number 10 have been changed to an A. This is to save space and to allow one digit for each generation entry. The number 10542 will be listed as A542 and will not change the designation for the individual.

The spelling of the surname was signed two different ways during the 1840's and 1850's. Joseph's deeds are recorded in the name Myers. In 1841, Joseph gave consent of marriage for his daughter, Eleanor. The name is first written as Myers, and then crossed out and is written as Miers. On February 15, 1847, William signed the death certificate of Joseph, his father, and the oath of administration of his father's estate, as "Miers". On the inventory of the estate, he signed his name as "Myers". William's grandson, John J. Myers, wrote a family history of William Myers. In it, he states that after he became a school teacher, Joseph H., second son of William, had the family name changed to Myers. On the marriage consent, Joseph made his "X", probably the court recorder signed his name.

JOSEPH MYERS born between 1780 and 1790 (1840 census), married Sarah . Sarah born between 1790 and 1800, died between 1840 and 1846 (1840 census). Joseph died 11 February 1847 Bond County, Illinois (death certificate). He purchased 160 acres in Mills Township NE1/4 of Section 22 Township 4N in Range 3W which was recorded 15 April 1817. In March 1831, he purchased the adjoining 80 acres which had been bought by Stephen Myers 15 November 1817. After his death, his son William became administrator of his estate. The south half of this land was what remained to be divided between the 10 children (apparently Sarah, his wife, was already dead). Joseph and Sarah had sold tracts of this land earlier. At the time of his death, Joseph's land was valued at $3.00 per acre. In 1962, the same land was valued at $200.00 per acre. Joseph's coffin cost $4.00, which was probably hand-hewn from native walnut.

While in prison, John M. contracted pneumonia and was taken 20 miles to a hospital where he was strapped to a board and leaned up against a wall because of lack of space. Several months later, his leg was amputated, but it was too late. The Geary Journal of Geary, Oklahoma published on Thursday June 25, 1914 this article; "T.L. Myers, who sustained a broken leg and other injuries in a threshing machine accident several months ago and who has been in the El Reno Hospital for the past month taking treatment, was operated upon there Tuesday and the leg was removed. At last reports he was resting easily and hope is entertained for his rapid recovery. Mr. Myers has certainly has a hard siege and has the sympathy of the public in his afflictions".

This was followed by another article dated Thursday July 2, 1914; "Word was received in Geary Saturday morning that T.L. Myers had passed away in the El Reno Sanitarium, where he had been undergoing treatment for injuries he had received several months before. The doctors had amputated one of his lower limbs in hope that he might recover, but his strength was too far spent to survive the operation. The body was brought to Geary Saturday night for burial.
