Bob Baker:
Hard to believe it’s
been 50 years since PA! What changes we have seen in our lifetimes and since we
left our alma mater. As for me, BS in Chemistry ODU 1964, MD MCV/VCU 1968, Elected
to Alpha Omega Alpha in 3rd year in Med School, Internship Bethesda Naval 1968-69, Medical Corps USNR
1969-1971, Ophthalmology Residency Duke University 1971-74, Private Practice as
Eye Physician and Surgeon in Portsmouth and Chesapeake and Community Faculty
EVMS 1974-2006. It is said there is no greater gift than sight and I had the
pleasure and privilege of helping people to see and I met a lot of nice folks
along the way of a very gratifying career.
I was first married in
1964, had two beautiful children, a daughter and son. Sadly, in 1982 the
marriage ended in divorce. My present wife Debbie and I have been happily
married for the last 25 years. We have 3 children and 2 grandchildren between
us--lawyers, married to lawyers, or tending bar--no docs!
Retirement has been a
blast playing golf, traveling, wintering in Fort Myers, researching my roots
through DNA genealogy, and doing my own investing with an interest in energy
and peak oil. In regards to golf, I am a single digit handicap, 2009 Senior
Club Champion at Heritage Palms in Fort Myers, and was lucky enough to have three
holes-in-one in a six-week period last summer. Genealogy has taken me back to
the Revolution, Gettysburg, and the Hanoi Hilton--lots of interesting stories
to leave the children! A visit to the Trans Alaska Pipeline was a travel
highlight last year.
I have read the bios
of our classmates with great interest: Kudos to those who have done well--Ms
Barnes would be proud! Praise to those who have had successful marriages and
who have raised happy children. Respect to those who have served our country,
who have taught our children and who have cared for the less fortunate. Condolences to the family and friends of our classmates who have
passed on before us. Many thanks to those who have
arranged our 50th Reunion. Until we meet again, Bob
