Walter Handy:
I really enjoyed the ocean and the bay growing up in the
Norfolk, Princess Anne and Virginia Beach area. It was here that my values and
love of learning (though not always what the teachers would have me learn) was
born. I enjoyed everything and everybody in high school. After high school, I
attended the University of North Carolina. (At the time, it was understood that
that meant “Chapel Hill.” Now one must say “UNC @ so-and-so”
). Some years after leaving UNC, I received a master's in counseling
from Northern Montana, now the U of MT @ Havre. My life and good times: After
graduation from UNC and commissioning in the Air Force, I married the former
Linda Hayes, an
Air Force Brat I was lucky to meet in Denver, CO at Church!
Prior to Air Force retirement, I was the base commander at Offutt AFB (Omaha
NE) and at F.E. Warren AFB (Cheyenne, WY). The Air Force gave me many
opportunities including an extended stay in DaNang,
Vietnam, work in seventeen Latin America countries and a number of Strategic
Air Command (SAC) bases across the West as a minuteman ICBM crew member and a
missile squadron commander and multiple assignments at SAC headquarters in
future systems. I had several assignments outside of SAC, including assignment
to New York as a recruiting commander which included the recruiting booth at
42nd Street and Broadway, often seen in Hollywood films (usually as the site of
a disaster)! I enjoyed the Air Force and wish that I had it to do all over
again. Recently, I retired from a second career after fifteen years with
Wachovia Bank. Linda and I have two wonderful daughters, one of whom just
turned 40! Both married military men. We have three grandchildren. We moved to
Roanoke, VA, after leaving the A.F. and our home is adjacent to the Blue Ridge
Parkway; therefore, we enjoy frequent visits from our forest
"friends" – one of whom is currently digging under our deck and
trying to create his winter paradise home -- NOT! Linda is a retired high
school English teacher. We travel to see our daughters and their families in Mississippi
and Hawaii, and we still enjoy other adventures. To keep my spare time filled,
I work with two small family businesses, diligently study the period 1600-1700,
enjoy our church, do aerobics, walk daily, and even “Zumba”
with Linda. Linda owns part of a sheep herd in Nebraska and allows me to be the
shepherd! It's been a wonderful 50 years, and Linda and I look forward to
seeing everyone at the PAHS gala celebration in October!
